Water and Dehydration

Quick Facts:

  • Drink plenty of water throughout the day
  • Avoid caffeine and carbonation
  • Water can be difficult, warm liquids and those with additives can be easier

Staying hydrated is an important part of early recovery and will remain so throughout the rest of your life. Staying hydrated offers a host of benefits not least of which is a faster recovery, more energy and suppression of hunger. Dehydration on the other hand can cause some significant problems including lightheadedness, chronic fatigue, physical pain, bladder and kidney problems as well as constipation.

If you feel thirsty you are already dehydrated. You may also feel nauseous and have dark colored urine. In addition to consuming more fluids, avoid anything with caffeine, which acts as a diuretic and flushes water out of your body.

Consult your post-operative instruction packet or call our office to learn more about how much water you should consume each day.
